Lilac syringavulgaris is an upright, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub in the olive family that typically matures to 12-16 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide. It is a very reliable spring-flowering shrub for cold winter gardens. Excellent choice as a specimen or accent in small groups, shrub borders, hedges or screens. Great in cottage gardens or in the margins of woodland gardens. Its flowers are very fragrant - lilac to purple flowers appear with white margins. It is a good cut flower that is beloved for bouquets.

Growing Instructions

Plant in well-drained soil 6-12" deep with crown at soil level, 10-12' apart. Soil and site: Select a site with full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Water infrequently but thoroughly during dry periods or drought. Lilacs are a low maintenance shrub that, with a little care, will last a lifetime. Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering, removing dead and broken branches. You may then cut back to desired size and shape.
